Until she was 21, Ingrid had given no thought to animal rights or even vegetarianism. In 1970, when she and her husband were living in Maryland and she was studying to become a stockbroker, a neighbor abandoned some kittens and Ingrid decided to take them to an animal shelter. Founder of Nature Forever Society. NFS has done extensive work for the conservation of sparrows. His inclination towards preserving the environment started from the age of 17. Water Conservationist, Founder, Drop Dead Foundation
Aabid Surti spends every Sunday going from house to house with a plumber to fix leakages for free. He visits an average of 1,600 homes and fixes around 400 leaky taps, saving more than 4, 00,000 litres of water, every year. And he has been providing this service for over 12 years. His concern for leaking taps stemmed from his personal experiences of living on a pavement with acute shortages at a very young age. Today, he has saved over 20 million litres of water so far. And this is not all. Surti is living a remarkable life. He is as renowned for his skills in various other fields as well. He is an acclaimed author of about 80 books and his collection of his short stories, titled ‘Teesri Aankh’, won the President’s Award in 1993. The water warrior is also a screen-play writer, a painter and more. As a cartoonist, Surti has created the popular character ‘Dabbuji’–the cartoon strip has been one of the longest-running comic strips in India, running without a break for over 30 years. He has also created another popular comic book character, ‘Bahadur’, which achieved cult status in the 1970s. His perseverance has won him many accolades and awards from various organizations and TV channels, which drives him to pursue his cause. Today, he works six days a week, writing, painting and drawing. On the seventh day, he spends a few hours, trying to create awareness, and motivate people to save water in his neighbourhood.

Jayant Joshi, a microbiologist, has invented a simple Kitchen Kompost Bucket. Been doing this since 12 years, goes to various societies to conduct demos and educate the people. Since then, he has sold 20,000 compost buckets. As a resident of Thane, he was concerned by the waste issues in his area. Soon, he came up with a compost waste basket to reduce the burden of waste in Mumbai and Thane. Presently, he is invited by prestigious institutions and organizations to give talks to promote waste segregation.
Water Harvesting & Management, Yavatmal
A dedicated organic farmer since 1996, Subhash Sharma has a prosperous and sustainable 17-acres farm in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra where farmers’ suicide is common. He belongs to one of the few experts in India, who practices water conservation, harvesting and management for sustainable farming even in a small patch of land. He has developed various distinctive measures for different geographical locations to utilize rainwater for farming. One of them is Greed Locking Technique for farms in plains and contour farming for slopes, which block 100% rain water in the farm itself and turn it into groundwater. He can manage similar techniques for urban rainwater harvesting also.
Out of 17 acres of farmland, 13 acres is used for growing crops using natural and contour farming, while the balance 4 acre is left for cow grazing. Vegetables, pulses and coriander are mainly grown at the farm. Also there are 200 trees planted around the farmland. He has created a good example of how farming can be sustainable with low-cost model and with self-dependence on seeds, water and fertilizer.
For last 15 years, besides practicing the best practices for organic farming, he has spent majority of his time towards educating fellow farmers around these best practices. He has created awareness about organic farming as self-sustainable farming on mass scale.
Sharma advises farmers to focus on 3 main factors–water, soil and environment. He encourages farmers this way and emphasizes that to follow the mantra to be successful as farmer is–conserve water, enrich soil and promote micro-organisms to create an environment that is friendly for crops.
Sustainable Lifestyle, Mysore
Vivek Cariappa, a graduate in Economics (Hons) from Delhi University and a “sadhak” of organic sustainable lifestyle for almost 3 decades, has been practicing organic farming since 1986. He converted 26 acres of chemically abused & eroded land into eco-friendly organic unit rich in biodiversity, self-sustaining w.r.t. food, cloth, fuel and medical needs that demonstrate a farming family’s’ strength in diversity leading to minimum food mile and farming with primary productivity. His farm is self-sustaining truly in such extent that there is nothing except salt purchased from outside.
Many of crops are processed on-farm and converted to value added products such as jaggery, vinegar, cheese, jams and unpolished rice and then sold directly to consumers. Almost 2000 value-added products including organic fabric products, biofuel created an identity in the marketplace as products of farm with a difference. He is one of the key players in a bi-monthly organic market held in Mysore called the Green Bazaar.
Apart from organic cultivation techniques, Cariappa has good experience in soil conservation, water harvesting, and food production for self-reliance and holistic concepts for community development. He has imparted training and awareness on sustainable farming and organic lifestyle on mass scale.
Cariappa has been awarded with renowned ‘Krishi Pandit’ award from the Governor of Karnataka for Organic Farming and Deshasnehi award from the India Development Society for our work in the field of rural empowerment. His most important messages for farmers is the rule not to waste any resource of the farm; at every level one component’s waste becomes another component’s input.
Since the past 15 years, Julius Rego has been working in field of environment conservation. He sustained his connect with nature as he led nature trails for the BNHS. Rego was also the visiting faculty at the Kamla Raheja School of Architecture, Juhu. He was first introduced to urban farming when he used to volunteer at an NGO in Mumbai. Eventually, he developed his passion for urban planning and environmental conservation and started conducting programmes on kitchen gardening and environmental conservation in more than 50 schools and colleges in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Through the years, Rego has set up several kitchen gardens in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. At present, he is setting up an organic farm at Khopoli. He is also helping a trust set up two urban farms, Cheshire Home, Andheri, for challenged children and men and a school, Assisi Bhavan, Goregaon, an old age home.
